I'm not sure if this is software or OSX -- I'm thinking X, because I believe this happened when I upgraded to Panther. All of a sudden, all my purchaswed itunes songs are gone.
When I upgraded, I went from just one account to four. Took me a while to figure out songs were missing (probably 20 or 25 -- not much more than that). I've searched and cannot locate them. Some had been also transferred to my desktop, so I can recover them (and some were burned to a CD, so I can get those back, too. And -- as I did a backup to an external HD right before upgrading -- I'm assuming actually that ALL of them are on that drive -- haven't checked yet.
My point -- has this happened to anyone else? Any one have any ideas as to WHY, or where the songs went? My daughter lost probably 15 songs she'd purchased.

is your itunes music store account authorized to your new panther login account?
in itunes:
advanced > check for purchased music
and it will make sure you have all the purchased music that you should.

Gone meaning you can't find them in your itunes playlist or gone in the sense that you looked in the music directory of all the users home accounts and you can't find it...?
There's a lot of scenarios here:
1) The files are there but your computer is not reauthorized as it should be
2) The files are there but iTunes needs to be told they are really there by finding them manually and putting them back in
3) The files are in some random users home directory and you need to add them to iTunes
4) The files are gone.
It actually sounds like three to me - you went from one account to four, and I'm pretty sure purchased music isn't shared between acounts unless you do a little monkeying... although I might be wrong.
HTH,

Thanks for the help. No, I'm not sure I've been reauthorized, so I'll check that.
I do mean "gone," as in I've done searches via name, via audio, via some other criteria and cannot find them anywhere. It's pretty perplexing. But, as it only seems to be PURCHASED music that's gone, I wondered if something else might be going on.
I'm going to investigate the possibilities raised here. I appreciate the input.

Well, I reauthorized the computer, but some songs are still gone. Am quite perplexed.
And actually, some others, which were purchased, remain in the library, but not in the "purchased songs" files. Quite strange.

Just go to iTunes and redownload them.
You bought the songs. You own them now.
