How do I go about installing the Classic Environment on my system at home?
I've used QuickTax (Canada) for several years to do my tax return, but since last year's tax return, I have installed OSX, and of course in the last few weeks, Panther. This year's QuickTax Mac packaging advises that "QuickTax is designed for Macintosh OS 9.x, and will run on all OS X systems in Classic mode."
Despite the fact that I did have an OS9 (Classic) System folder on my hard drive when I ran Jaguar, I find that now that Panther is installed, I don't have an OS 9 System Folder on my hard drive anymore, and of course QuickTax is asking for one. If I wanted to install Classic on my Panther system, would this simply be a matter of downloading OS 9.2 from the Apple Downloads site and installing it on my computer, or what is the best way of installing the Classic environement so that I can run QuickTax?
Thanks for any advice you can give me!

If you don't have an OS 9 install CD, you can probably find it on one of the Software Restore CDs that came with your computer.

I'm in a similar situation. A driver that I need for my digital camcorder requires Classic in order to be installed. I didn't install Classic when upgrading to Panther.
Two questions: 1) Is there any way to get around not having Classic when an app seemingly "needs" Classic to be installed? 2) Is Classic not available on the Panther install CDs?
Thanks.

Classic isn't part of the Jaguar or Panther install CDs. You have to install it separately off of the OS 9 installer or Software Restore CD/DVD that came with your computer.

No, Classic is not available on the Panther install CDs. You have to get it from the System Restore CDs that came with your computer, or install it from the original OS 9 CD if that is what you have.
Most of the time, if an app "needs" Classic to be installed, it really needs it. Either the application itself requires it, or it's a Carbon app inside a Classic (non-Carbon) installer. Either way, you need to use Classic to install, unless you can contact the software manufacturer to send you an updated version of the install software. (Doubtful, unless it's a paid-for upgrade).

Tell Apple to include a Classic installer in the OS install packages. There's over 400 MB free on Disk 3 of the Panther install discs, so there's certainly room. This would make life much less confusing for newbies!
If you don't have an OS 9 boot CD, you need to dig it out of the Software Restore discs. In order to make your life easier, Apple in many cases makes the $@#% folder containing the Classic installer invisible on said discs. To get to it, insert the Software Restore CD (or DVD), double-click its desktop icon, type Command-Shift-G, and type '.images' (without the quotes, with the period in front). If you have a multi-CD set, try this on each of the CD's until you find the one with the Classic image in it. Once you find the OS9Classic.dmg, you can just mount it and drag the Classic system folder to your hard drive.

Hey there,
I have Jaguar installed and my OS 9 CD's handy; and am wanting to install OS 9 or Classic onto my B&W G3 without having Jaguar ruined... can I do it? I've looked and looked at threads saying yes/no, so does anyone know of a URL explaining it in steps?
Is it as simple as inserting the OS 9 CD's and rebooting from them, then selecting a target disk (or will the target disk get formatted... which would kill me)?
Thanks in advance,
BD

What about the MacOS 9 Install CD that came with my PowerBook. If I only want to run it in Classic mode, could I just copy the System Folder from the CD (would I be missing out on anything this way?), or do I actually have to use the installer?
Edit: Hmm, no I suppose not...
