Can anyone explain to me the rationale for placing the Firewall preferences pane inside of Sharing? For the life of me, I cannot comprehend why it should be located there. The Firewall has little to do with sharing. Here are some better places for it, IMO:

1) Network Pane
2) Security Pane

Either of those locations would make infinitely more sense. And yes, I do realize this is a minor issue, but it matters to me.

Well.. sharing and the software firewall are all related to the service ports. (i.e. port 80 for web server).

Since the Service tab is under the Sharing..it would be easier for users to get into the firewall part next to it.

[correct me if I was wrong]

I agree it should be elsewhere. With a button to take you there from Sharing perhaps - in the same way Date and Time has a connection to International for setting date and time formats.

I would think it would be under Security for obvious reasons but hey only Apple really knows.

I think it's there for the reason Kenneth describes. But it's defintely a BAD reason, and should be somewhere else... Noone will ever think about going to Sharing to find the firewall prefs...

I'm sure lots of people are missing this feature simply because it's that deep inside System Preferences.
I would like to see it as a pref on it's own.

Erm... it's in Sharing because you set there which ports you share.

I believe it should be under Network pane and tied to the location settings. I.e. each "location" can have different firewall settings.

For example, one for being connected to your home network where you would have file sharing, etc ports enabled and one for when you are at a public access point where you would want all ports blocked.
