I have tried repeatedly to use PINE to send email, but keep getting the following error: Relaying denied, try authenticating.

I can get my messages with no problem.

My configuration is as follows:
smtp-server is smtp.mac.com
user-domain is mac.com
nntp-server <no value set>

inbox-path is {mail.mac.com}inbox

everything else is set as default

I can send and receive mail with Mac Mail without any problems or errors and I recently upgraded to Panther.

I haven't modified any postfix or send-mail config files.

Does anyone have any ideas of what setting my be incorrect?

Thanks,

Elaine

I suspect that PINE (being ancient and all) doesn't support authenticated SMTP, and further, that mac.com requires it. The relaying message comes into play when neither the originating nor the destination email address matches that of the server. However, on newer servers the server will require authentication to prove that you really are who you say you are.

Actually, I forgot to mention in my post that I was able to send email to myself and retrieve it.

So I'm still confused.

However, my goal is to be able to use a text-based email app. I get so much junk that I would relish the lack of distraction of a purely text based app.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I might use that allows for authentication.

Thanks

Elaine

Try setting your smtp-server to:

smtp.mac.com/yourdotmacusername

You can either do that in the setup screen or edit the hidden .pinerc file in your homedir.

I don't know how .mac mail works, but if it accepts cram-md5 authentication the above should do it.
