I have a friend who uses Windows XP and cannot read my Panther-generated zip-files.

The files are quite large (50+Mb)

XP as well as Winzip refuse to open it. This happened after several tries and for multiple zip-files.

Any clues?

try decompressing them in OS X to see if they're corrupted.

make sure the filenames don't have illegal characters on Windows

i'd say to try dropzip or .tar.gz (hfstar for resource forked files), but if there is a problem with the Panther zip, than that's not helpful

Semi-related question... Does Finder's "Create Archive" use /usr/bin/zip or that "BOM Archive Helper" that I've seen when right clicking some zip files?

I just tried it with Activity Monitor open and the Finders processor usage just went up when creating the zip.

When extracting, it definitely uses "BOM Archive Helper" though as that appeared in Activity Monitor.
