i have been using Mac OS10.3.2, and mail through .mac,i.e. my email account is xxxxx@mac.com, and is well all along, but it just can't send e mail , probably since i connect via network of my dormitory, i can still get mail, but just can't send, i
ve checked with the network utility, and "ping" , get the following message :
" Ping has started ...
PING mail.mac.com (17.250.248.64): 56 data bytes
--- mail.mac.com ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss"
so what is the problem , and how can i fix it?
many thanks

if your useing a high speed connection, you need to make your smtp set for your service provider.
i use yahoo for pop3 and my smtp was smpt.cox.east.net or something odd like that
either way it has to be what your provider is

A slight correction: One does not need to use the SMTP server provided by the network one is connected to, necessarily. It is sometimes easier to use the network's SMTP, but it is not mandatory. My cable provider's SMTP is flaky, so when I'm using my .Mac account I use smtp.mac.com. I can also use my webserver's SMTP server, as long as I've logged in to read mail from one of my accounts on that server. I can always depend on my webserver, no matter where I am.
Now what is likely happening to the original poster is .Mac's SMTP is down. It happens. If you're dissatisfied by that fact, you could either use your network's SMTP, or you could pay for a website. I'm not entirely sure whether or not any companies offer dedicated SMTP accounts, but that would be nice.

hi, just to supplement for more information, the error message from the "mail" is as follow:
"This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
The server ¡§smtp.mac.com¡¨ refused to allow a connection on port 25.", but it is perfectly normal before !!! so ? what should i do?
thank again

Or you could use Panther's in-built SMTP server and use your own Mac as the server. You can do this with Postfix enabler.

I was going to mention that you can use built-in SMTP. The major problem with that is everyone says sendmail is terrifically vulnerable to hackers if the administrator (in this case the user) doesn't know what he or she is doing. I've heard that you can work with sendmail for years and still be mystified by some of its security issues. It's definitely an option, but some networks may not allow it and it may present a security risk.
