i recently got a firewire drive case, plus a 200 GB hard drive to put in it.

my plan was to boot from the panther CD, run disk utility, format the FW drive, and then install panther onto the FW drive.

the drive formatted fine (i did it in mac os x journaled format), but when i came to choose to install panther on either my internal drive or external, when i clicked on the external drive icon, a small exclamation mark flashed up next to the icon, and a message along the lines of "you are unable to install or boot from this drive".

have i done something wrong? i just can't figure out what!

any advice appreciated.

What machine do you have and do you have the latest version of that machine's firmware installed?

If you can boot from other firewire devices, I don't know what to tell you. If you have never tried, you may not have the latest version of your Mac's firmware installed. You can see what you have installed in the Apple System Profiler; it's the boot ROM version. iMac Slot-Loaders should have 4.1.9f, *ESPECIALLY* if you want to run 10.2 or later.

ACSA 10.4/10.3, ACTC 10.3, ACHDS 10.3
