Is it possible to just install the command line C compiler without the whole GUI development package? I just want to compile some tarball source code.

Sorry, I don't think so. You could try to do a custom install of the developer package and deselect the stuff you don't need (you can choose not to install examples and documentation), but I don't think you can not install XCode, for example. You could probably just delete /Developer when the install is done though and have just the gcc compiler with no Apple stuff.

I did see on the XCOde CD a reference to a gcc package. Installed that and the BSD SDK. Got what looks like a gcc2 up. But no make that I can see...

Ok, installed the basic XCode after all and everything working.

gcc can bootstrap itself, just download the source and compile it.
