Hey gang,

I'm getting SERIOUSLY frustrated as I try to work on a client project that I had archived to DVD using Toast Lite 5.2.1 and now NONE of my DVD's are being recognized on my PB 667 DVI running 10.3.1. The burner was a TDK Indi DVD (Plextor mechanism inside for those that don't know), blank DVD's were TDK DVD+Rs burned using Mac OS Extended and PC Hybrid format. All DVD's were "verified" by Toast, and oddly...ALL DVDs (more than 20) show up just fine on my PC (Athlon 1.7GHz running XP, 1 GB RAM, 120 GBHD, BTC 8X DVD+/-RW). The data is tons and tons of high-res digital photography (I'm a pro photographer and designer) of various client work (high school seniors, product imagery, corporate client work, a couple of weddings, etc...).

By the way...I got rid of the external TDK Indi DVD burner as I'm going to wait for the 8X models to gel a little and go that route...so currently I only have the Matsushita combo drive that came stock in my PB. So that's the drive I'm using to read these DVDs....did I make a major boo boo by using Mac OS Extended rather than just Mac OS and PC Hybrid format?

I tried booting under OS 9.2.2 as well, and no dice there either.

WHAT is the problem? I AM new to DVD burning (just burned these two weeks ago to clean out my external 120GB HDs), but there is nothing so complicated in burning data to a disc....sigh...lol...

I did notice that the DVDs on the PC show up as UDF (or UDP - mind block at the moment), which I've heard is bad for Mac....but I've also heard Panther has cleared that up...so I don't know what to think...and I don't know how to fix this....

And HOW do you tell Toast Lite 5.2.1 what format to write in if "non-UDF" is what I have to use?

All help is welcome, needed, and appreciated, as I've been going nuts from last evening to now....lol...so if you could help me soon I'd be ecstatic...as my last IQ point is about to jump from a tall ledge in my mind (sanity already threw itself out a window...so hurrry...if intellect leaves too I'm going to left wandering through life like Al Gore....and that CAN'T be good... )

Thanks again,

The PowerBook's DVD drive can not read DVD+Rs. It only will read DVD-Rs.

Apple doesn't support DVD+R, a non-standard format. Buy some DVD-Rs instead.

Additionally, there are several versions of UDF. Apple only supports up to UDF 1.5, not 2.0 as used in some video recorders.

You should also be aware that there is a bug in the UDF support (in Jaguar and Panther, but not OS 9) which prevents reading any file larger than 1.0 gigabytes.

it's a drive issue, not an apple issue per se. my ibook reads DVD+R/W discs.

When you say its a drive issue...does that mean my drive SHOULD be able to read DVR+Rs and isn't, or that my drive doesn't support DVD+R which isn't Apple's "fault" per se (as they didn't make the drive)?

Someone from another forum said the same thing about DVD+R being the probable problem, but now I'm just curious if anyone with a 667 DVI can read DVD+Rs in their own powerbook?

Thanks you guys for your help, I really appreciate it as I've been having a little stressy-fit within my own head trying to figure this out....I completely forgot that reading the DVD+R format could be an issue...

to all,

GS

P.S. - thanks for those GREAT bits of info on UDF versions and known bugs...that definitly affects me as I have occasional files that go about a Gig and a little over. Guess I'll have to LZW those bad boys.

The drive is not capable of reading DVD+R. I'm not sure if Apple ships any drives, even the most current, that can read DVD+R.

I think I read (something like) Sony drives can read DVD+R(W) and the newer machines like G5s and some iMacs have these drives. But I don't remember any of those specifics because I don't have any of those machines or a Sony drive and I don't buy DVD+R media

Although, the drive mechanism may support certain formats by default, Apple has disabled some formats via firmware modifications. For example, my 1GHz TiBook with SuperDrive should be able to handle DVD-RW but Apple removed that capability. However, it sounds like they are starting to support DVD+R with recent hardware. I'll have to check if my newer AlBook can do it.

Correct. Apple has switched to Sony based super-drives. I have currently a 1.25dual MDD that read DVD+R fine, as well as a 17" aluminum powerbook that also reads DVD+R. We also have G5 (they all read DVD+R) as well as newer iBooks.
Apple DVD Player will not play DVDs that are ripped to DVD+R (not that I would know... however, VLC player does the job just fine.

Apple also uses Pioneer optical drives (Apple System Profiler identifies mine as a DVR-106D in my G5) and it'll read and write DVD+RW just fine (bought one to try it out).
But I agree that older hardware probably lacks the ability to read "+" media.
