I have this intermittent issue on my 1ghz tibook running 10.3.2. Sometimes
the keys on my keyboard change what character gets sent to an application. This happened with Mail.app the other day, and it is occurring with the Finder right now. Other applications are unaffected.
Trying to rename a folder on my desktop to 1234567890-= results in:
+?š??žýáíé='

(I'm not sure those characters will come through, but I guess they should.. anyway, after the + are several accented characters: escrzyaie)
Also, typing y results in z and typing z results in y.
Typing !@#$%^&*() results in 1234567890 oddly enough.

I'm pretty sure this is the same mapping that was occuring in Mail.app the other day.. I know the y/z switch is the same at least.

After I quit Mail the other time, when I relaunched it it was back to normal. I thought it
was a bug in Mail until just now, when it happened in the Finder. Very strange. Safari, MS Word, and everything else seem to be behaving normally.

I'm running vpc 6, which I may or may not have been the other time as well. Maybe that's messing with something.

Has anyone else seen this?

Sounds like you selected a keyboard layout other than the one you want.

Fix: System Preferences -> International -> Input Menu

Check the keyboard layouts you want. Then you can select them from the menu bar. (You can then uncheck "Show input menu in menu bar" to make it go away.)
