Hi all,
I am a zero regarding setting up an ftp server, and i wanted to know if there is an EASY way to do it with my old Power 8600-250.
I need to share files with customers without having to send them (like 141 PAL format picts), fro the customer to check on them anytime when needed...
I can only run 8.6 or something like that on the 8600.
How can I do? And remember EASY! ;o)
Thankz!

without judging your technical ability, i suggest you stick to os x. lindows is for x86 PCs, and will not work on your mac, and even the mac distributions of linux are not as friendly as os x.

i'm not sure where it is in 10.1 (sorry, my 10.1 box is behind a firewall so i can't vnc in to check), but under 10.2 and later it's under Sharing -> Services -> FTP Access. it might have been under a similar entry, only under Network? in 10.1.

Netpresenz is a good choice. More affordable than ASIP, which is another option to consider.

The main purpose of this app was to get rid of the need for the crappy implementations by Netpresez and Rumpus. It runs beautifully in OS X.
It will by far give you the easiest interface to setup what you want. Plus the developer is only an email away and responds quickly to all inquiries or questions.
Its by far the easiest to setup, use, and maintain. Plus it can run as a service in OS X, so you don't have to worry about it getting terminated when a user logs in our out of the machine. It maintains its own user database so you don't have to create OS X users for each and every user. You can easily restrict access to just a few folders, or build your own file system for the user.
Also has remote administration so you can see what's going in the server from anywhere.
(DISCLAIMER:I am the software developer.)

Shure crush may be more compatable but X is a dog on an 8500, I have one with a 300Mhz G3 upgrade and its just plane slow. 8.6 rund so much faster on the older hardware.
OS X ~$100
CuteFTP free?
OS 8.6 came with the machine
Netprenz ~$50

For a long, long time I ran almost the exact same configuration as you. A PowerMac 8500 with MacOS 8.6 used as an FTP server.
I used Netpresenz because it was simple and effective, and was a very happy user for many years.
I would strongly recommend AGAINST trying to shoehorn MacOS X onto that box. It would be frustratingly slow. Plus, the built-in FTP server blows chunks, IMHO (almost zero configurability, I've had issues with our corporate firewall and it, etc).
I've looked at CrushFTP, and really liked the configurability and flexibility. But (to be honest) I was too cheap to buy it. (sorry! Yes, I paid for Netpresenz, but didn't want buy another one when Netpresenz was functioning fine).
Currently, I'm running Panther (MacOS X 10.3.2) and pure-ftpd, and I cannot speak highly enough of it! It's industrial-strength, highly configurable, and secure. I also use PureFTPd Manager (search for it on versiontracker), which provides a nice GUI front end.

If you just want to set up and FTP Server, then I concur that CrushFTP is the way to go under 8.6.
I set it up once on an old PowerCenter. It worked fine and was a breeze to set up once I had the right Java VM installed.

FWIW, I am running a UMAX S900 with a G3/500 upgrade and 768MB RAM as an archival/print server. It is running 10.2.8 without a hitch via, XpostFacto. It also is used as a secondary workstation when my wife is on the primary machine. Granted it isn't a speed demon but I can run Photosho 7 occassionally and it is bareable for basic graphic processes. I think the 8600 is actually a step above this machine in terms of bus speed. Also there was a marked difference when I went from 10.1.5 to 10.2. Just wanted to offer a success story about this generation of Macs running OSX, eventhough they are not supported.

CrushFTP will run just fine in OS 9. Still all the same features. You can even run it GUI'less for less CPU overhead drawing the GUI.
CrushFTP can also accept HTTP uploads so if a client doesn't have FTP, they can you a regular Web browser to upload a file. CrushFTP works great behind routers whether they support NAT FTP servers or not.
CrushFTP is free for up to 5 users connected (non registered trial), $25 for 10 users. That is enough for a home user behind a DSL or cable modem.
(Anyone else notice 100% CPU usage by safari for the spinning smiley icons when your composing?)

We rely on FTP to receive a large proprtion of our work (we're newspaper publishers). For years we used ASIP and it was fine but we ditched it when we moved all our servers to OSX.
We tried the FTP of OSX Server and it was just horrible. We moved to CrushFTP and haven't looked back. Granted I haven't run it on OS9 but I know it works. It has a million features and has been as solid as a rock for us.
The developer is only an email away and it's a steal at the price. No question this is the way I'd go.
BTW, we run NetPresenz on our RIP machines to move data to our proofing system and I'm not a fan of it.
cheers
