Ok, hope I explain it correctly.

iPods stopped updating in iTunes, the progress bar would freeze on the first song that it tried to automatically download.

Called Apple, they suggested that I drag iTunes into the trash, then download a fresh copy.

I downloaded a fresh copy and I ran the Installer. I moved throught the steps in the Installer wizard, but then

When I get to "Select a Destination" drive, the text below says "Instaling this software requires 0 bytes of space"

When I get to "Custom Install on Macintosh HD", both packages say "Disabled" and their sizes are 0 bytes.

HELP!

try deleteing the itunes receipt (if you have one) from your Library/Receipts folder.
sometimes an installer looks at that, sees that an app is installed, and wont let it proceed.

Great, that worked. I re-installed iTunes. Thanks!

I still have one iPod that refuses to synch. In fact, it will not mount the desktop and I cannot reset it using iPod Updater.

shucks!

VX: If your iPod won't go into Firewire mode, turn it off, plug it into the wall and when it turns back on hold the forward and reverse buttons down at the same time. It will force the device into disk mode, and you should be able to get it to mount. My iPod wouldn't mount until I used this trick. Once it mounts, back up anything you don't have a copy of (files that you've stored on the iPod), then get a copy of the latest iPod Software Updater and click to Erase and Restore it.

I tried to put it into Firewire Disk mode, but no dice. I rebooted, then quickly held down fwd and rew, the screen then displays the check mark with "ok to disconnect". I then plug into my iMac...nothing happens. The drive on the iPod keeps spinning.

I ran Disk Utility, but that just spins as it says "Gathering Disk Information". It stays hung until I just unplug the iPod.

I also start up Software 1.3 Updater and then plug in the iPod. Doesn't show up there either.

hmmmmmmmm.

Try holding the menu and play buttons. This will reboot the iPod. If that doesn't work, you probably have a dead iPod. If it's under warranty, Apple will replace it. If not, still wouldn't hurt to call Apple. They sometimes replace things out of warranty.
