open up by hitting just the icon in the dock after closing a system preferences window? until recently, when i closed the sys pref window, sys pref quit altogether. now, when i close a sys pref window, sys pref stays running. i'm used to just hitting the icon in the dock and it opening up. now, if sys pref is still running, it can't open a pref pane unless i go up to view>show all preferences. of course, if i close sys preferences, simply hitting the icon in the dock will open the window with all preferences. sorry this is long and rambling. i'm a switcher and i wasn't sure how to explain the situation. i'm running panther with all updates on a alum pb 15". thanks for any advice.

Something is b0rked on your system, methinks.

System Preferences in Panther *do* quit when you close the window.

If they don't, something's odd.

Have you repaired permissions?

This may be somewhat unrelated to your problem, but may be helpful anyway.
Go to www.versiontracker.com/macosx and search for Prefling. This is a free little "docklet" that you can put anywhere in your Dock (either the Applications or Documents/Trash side of the divider line). When you click and hold on it, a menu pops up listing all the Preference Panes, whether System Preferences is running or not.

under panther the system prefs app dock menu does what prefling does anyway.

only when the system prefs.app is running otherwise it just sits there. prefling does what it does all the time running or not.

I'm not sure that's entirely true. It's just impossible to quit Prefling.

No, you can't "quit" Prefling because it's a Docklet, not a standard app. It will display all your pref panes regardless of whether or not System Preferences is running.
System Preferences will only display a list if it's running.
