Hi,
I did a clean install of Panther back in October. Recently, I restored the apps that came with my computer, from my old Jaguar System Restore CD. Now, from the Finder, when I choose Mac Help from the Help Menu, I'm taken to the old Jaguar Help Files. I cannot find the Panther help files package anywhere. I've tried looking on all three CDs and it just isn't on any of them.

How do I get Mac Help to open my Panther Help Files?

Someone referred me to http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/helpviewer.html

But i tried this, and it didn't help. I've also tried searching on Apple.com - but there is nothing on it there.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
BKB.

If no suggestions from that site above helped you, I haven't a clue in the world...deleting that cache folder should have done the trick, something must be jacked up in your system...

How do I figure out what is "jacked"?

Well, it sounds like using your Jaguar System Restore CD in Panther didn't help much...if you clean installed Panther, what good does the Jag System Restore CD do for you in restoring "older" apps? I don't get it.

Wanted to sign up to Earthlink. One way was to reinstall all the additional apps that came with Jaguar . I could only do this from the System Restore CD that came with Jaguar. Make sense now?

No, it doesn't...

http://www.earthlink.net/home/software/mac/osx/

Or use Pacifist to extract that app off the CD....

Hm...
Lost my DSL connection for a week. Couldn't go to:
http://www.earthlink.net/home/software/mac/osx/

Or go online to download Pacifist.

Make sense now?

Nope.

I can have my Earthlink account set up using the Network Pref pane in about 35 seconds if I needed it...no software needed...

Without ever having used Earthlink before and therfore not having a valid username/password not to mention local access number. Impressive...

The newer system restore CDs/DVDs come with all the software that is preinstalled on the computer, like Mac OS 9, Graphic Converter, Snapz Pro X, OmniGraffle, etc.

If you clean install Panther and want to reinstall the apps that came with the machine, you have to use the System Restore disk. The difference is that you can restore those without restoring the operating system too.

Well, you can call Earthlink and do the setup over the phone, and then have them guide you through entering the proper settings, and you can also go to many office supply stores (OfficeMax comes to mind) and get an Earthlink CD if you want it.

Finally, someone who thinks faster than they type...

In my case, restoring the apps from the old system restore disk did exactly that, but they ALSO replaced my Mac Help files with the older Jaguar Help Files. This is quite clear when I browsed though the contents of

/library/documentation/help/machelp.help

and did a search for "Panther" which came back empty. It is therefore not a corrupt cache problem. Instead the entire help file has been replaced by the older Jaguar machelp.help file. Any idea on how to get my Panther machelp.help file back?

God, everyone is jumping on this guy for posting a simple help request.

You can get the Mac Help files back with Pacifist, the link for which is in my signature. Use it to open the Mac OS X install packages, then click Find and do a search for MacHelp.help. You should be able to extract the Mac Help in this way.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I take it you are Charles Srstka?
Thanks for your reply & for Pacifist - an excellent program. Very easy to use, intuitive and does the job nicely. Restored the Panther help files without a problem.

Thank you,
BKB.
