Brand new from Apple store. Came with Jaguar & 1 gig RAM fitted by Apple. Supplied with 10.2 installer. Stopped booting from this after a few months.
Kernel panic with this disc boot and Disk warrior 3.0.1 too.

Sent to Apple for repair who can only get it to boot from Panther disc (which Apple have promised to supply me with) Panther now on HD

Alsoft say that this is a problem with my iMac only and I'll have to order a Panther Disk warrior.

Has had logic board and Airport extreme card replaced by Apple (in Jan 2004)

Why do I have this problem?

Maybe because you express yourself in a way that is not easy to understand?

Apologies for my syntax but I'm trying to keep my posts short. Please tell me what you don't understand so that you can provide me with the answer

Your problem is that it won't boot 10.2.8 at all? Or some DiskWarrior CD you have? Does it boot fine from HD (10.2.8 and/or 10.3) or does only booting from CD not work?

will boot from Jaguar and Panther on HD

Kernel panics with Jaguar whether on CD DVD

DW is Jaguar so is Norton and so are the original installer discs I was supplied with.

And Apple couldn't get it to boot 10.2 from CD/DVD either?
I think your options are to just take it back to the Apple store and return it because it does not work as advertised and they couldn't repair it and get another one, or to forget about Jaguar and see that you get your promised 10.3 disc(s) and create a bootable 10.3 CD with Diskwarrior your own.

To exactly see why it fails to boot one would need to analyze the panic logs.

Moonray,

An Apple service provider has called me and asked to take the iMac in. I have agreed to this and I will enclose the letter that is reproduced below.

I asked the Service provider if I could have a new iMac on failure of this hardware repair. They will not commit themselves

Letter is as follows.

Thank you for taking over the care of my faulty 17 inch iMac

Panther has been installed by Apple Centre Warrington on the HD as a short fix, and this boots up fine.

Jaguar on the HD takes more than 150 seconds to boot.

Jaguar will still not boot from the Superdrive.

Apple Warrington says that Panther will boot from the Superdrive though I am unable to try this.

I am only able to try Jaguar start-up discs e.g. the original DVD installer discs, Disc warrior 3 & 3.0.1 and Norton utilities. These all cause kernel panic.

I would like to upgrade to Panther in light of this iMac still not working properly, I am reluctant to do this at home.

You may wipe the HD and perform any repairs that will return it to working as normal condition i.e. bootable from the Super drive and from the HD with normal boot times.

I would like you to do a clean install of Panther. I will pay for the installer discs by VISA.

I hope then they'll care well about your iMac and that you'll see it back very soon.

Dear Moonray,

Just to update you about the above problem.

It seems that the firmware on the Airport extreme card will not let the system boot from Jaguar.

The Apple service provider has installed the appropriate firmware/card and now all is well.

Thanks for the update, it's always nice to know how things find their hopefully happy end.
It's a bit odd though that an Airport card wouldn't be backwards compatible, but I'm glad the issue is solved.
