I create most of my work on a G4 dual 1Ghz running 10.3.2, and I need to send my customers large e-mail attachments, so I transfer them over an Airport network to a PowerBook G4 where I do all my e-mailing. The TiBook is running 10.2.8, and I set up the Drop Box in the Public folder for read/write access at all levels.

I drag files over to the Drop Box icon and they pop up almost instantly, but instead of being read/writeable, they are sometimes locked and sometimes only readable, but not writeable.

The files are not locked or restricted in any way when I copy them to the Drop Box, but somehow they pick up restrictions, even though the Drop Box folder, and the Public Folder that encloses it, both have read/write permissions in all three boxes.

Am I missing some trick? Or is there some way to circumvent the permissions, since I am the only person who uses these Macs?

I'm not sure, but I believe when you copy the file it preserves the owner of the file so if your desktop and Powerbook have different usernames you could run into trouble. Files also have permissions that you have to deal with.

Whenever I have any problems, I usually just hold down the option key and drag the file to the desktop (creating a copy) which will then be owned by the user of that system. Of course you have to be able to read the file to do that.

I don't know if that can help (I don't even have a computer to share files with!) but maybe someone else will pitch in if it doesn't.
