I have noticed something odd when I create new folders in OS X 10.2.8...

When I create the new folder in either icon or column view, it is given the usual default name of "Untitled Folder" is automatically highlighted in edit mode allowing me to immediately rename it. However, when I create a new folder in list view, it is highlighted for a moment in edit mode and then immediately exits edit mode. In order to rename it, I am forced to click on the folder to edit it (just as I do with any pre-existing folder). I thought it might have to do with the sort order of the list view, but it doesn't seem to matter.

Is this a bug? Is this handled in any preference pane? Is there some not-so-obvious rationale for this seemingly-odd behavior?

Any insights would be appreciated.

Yeah, get out of 10.2.8 and upgrade to Panther 10.3.2. Problem solved.

Well, I doubt there'll be any updates to Jag to fix this, so if it really annoys you, upgrade to Panther. Well worth the cash.

Not having seen Panther in action, I was not aware that this has been properly addressed. I haven't yet "splurged" for the upgrade, as I am probably going to be upgrading to a new desktop machine in the near future.

Thanks again!

If it's the Finder for which you'll be upgrading, I'd think twice. Panther apparently has ushered in a whole truckload of new bugs to replace the ones that they fixed in Jaguar.

It's my belief that the Finder is a thinly veiled attempt to acheive perpetual unemployment in the Apple Finder SW Dept. You see, it's probably so screwed up that any "new guy" to the Finder team immediately kills himself, his family, and any close friends. The engineers that already work on Finder all hate themselves so they just keep working on the software, making sure that they make work for themselves in the future. It's too big of a project for Apple to re-engineer at this point, and I would bet you a couple of bucks that Steve Jobs is really hoping that PathFinder eventually surpasses the steamy pile of cow squeeze that is the OSX Finder.
