In the apt. where I live my flatmates and I have a network set up...ofcourse all of their computers are PCs and I have my great TiPB. I use to be able to connect to their PCs and look at thier sharing directories. But know in Panther I can't do it!

First the 'connect to server' window is not helpful since I don't know their IP addresses. So I go thru browse and I see some folders, Workgroup, Local and Apt18. Inside the folder of Apt18 I see the alias icon of my flatmates PCs. But when I click on it to connect to them...it says that it could not connect "becuase the original item was not found"

Any suggestions how can I fix this.

Thanks

Find out their IP addresses and in the Connect to Server use smb://yourname@theirIP
Ensure you have an account on the computer you are trying to connect to or use one that already exists on their machine.

OK...I will try that.

There is no way of finding their PCs by browsing the network window...a way to do it with out thier IP?

They also say that there are no accounts...i.e you do not need an account...I have never been able to pass this problem...I end up typing login: administrator pass: administrator....and it use to work.

any way to connect without a login and pass?

thanks.

The administrator is an account on the XP box. You will need at least a guest account and allow guest access.
You can use a terminal command, findsmb, which will return the address of all the windows xp or linux boxes using smb. This will also return the name of the machine, and the workgroup or domain it belongs to.
To get the network browser in the Finder to function, you must have SMB on in Directory Access, and have it configured with the workgroup name. Only computers with sharing on will show in the Network browser. The findsmb will show all computers on the network.
