Disk images that are only as big or as small as their contents.

This probably isn't a new suggestion, but it only really ocurred to me now. Dynamically-sized disk images would be pretty useful (like the Amiga RAM disk!) and the technology must be there in FileVault already. Good idea?

Dynamically growing disk images (called sparse disk images for whatever reason) have always been there. But they can not shrink again.

That's also what FileVault uses.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Ok, so half my great idea is still relevant. I'll have a look at these 'sparse' images, thanks. It seems a bit silly that your FileVault-enabled Home directory doesn't grow and shrink as needed btw.

Actually it does. FileVault uses sparse images so it grows as needed. Apple also added a process to reclaim unused space from time to time. It occurs when you log out. It will prompt you to reclaim unused space.
