Yeah, we wanna do this. With modern OS it shouldn't be too hard but we didn't find a way yet.

HELP! Newbies on the run...

No, ftp is no solution (I don't want to create new users for this)
KDX is horribly slow even on a fast line, whysoever.

SMB is just for LANs (?)

So how can we do it? There are several VPN CLIENTS for osx - but no Daemon/server?!

OpenVPN doesn't seem to be nice, I don't understand a single word on sourceforge at all anyway.

Are you only looking at doing file-sharing? Then simply type in the address of the other computer in the SMB connection. On MacOS X 10.2 an above this is simple: "Connect To Server" and type in "smb://ip.address.goes.here". On XP you have to be a little more creative, because there are a whole number of ways of setting it up, but none of them are as easy as MacOS X's. You might want to try typing the same thing in on a browser...

If you are looking for an Actual VPN, then there are a lot of different routes to take, and it depends on what you are trying to do. I just got done setting up my companie's PPTP VPN server using a devil-linux box. It is very easy to setup, and can make use of older Intel (and compatible) computer as the server. I have a how-to document that I am working on.

OpenVPN is a another solution, but I have not set it up yet. I am thinking of using this to link a couple of offices together. I looked it over, and it is fairly strait-forward as VPN setups go (VPN's can be very complex).

You will want to figure out what you want, and rephrase you question.

What is it you need to do exactly? And do you need to go both ways (come on, you know what I mean ) or one way?

Okay, what we want to do is filesharing via the Internet. Means: I want to show defined folders to my friend, like in a LAN. And vice versa. Dream: I have one folder called "Andy", I drop something in there and he has it on his desktop and vice v.

I am not shure I really understood what VPN menas and to be honest, I don't care. I just want to easily bring this file sharing to life.

Appreciate any help a lot. Is very annoying that THIS is so hard to do in 2004. should be something even my mum should be able to establish.

I do just what you are wanting! I don't know how secure it is but what I do is turn on personal filesharing, tell my router/firewall to direct external requests on the personal firesharing port number (548 or 427) to my mac. Then on the remote mac I use the connect to server (apple K) enter the ip of my router plus the port number, login and then I have access to my files. Plus you can save an alias to the remote macs desktop for easy access.

It is easy to do

But like I said, not sure on the secuity of that route.....

ARGH! Sorry just re-read your post, I'm going mac to mac sorry not XP to mac! Although you may be able to do the same using smb.....
