I have a FW HD that I use to keep a complete bootable backup of my system. I use DeJa Vu to do the backup. I did the backup today and ran TTP 4.0.1 to maintain and check both the internal HD and the FW HD. No errors or problems reported for either the internal HD or FW HD. So far everything is ok. I ran DiskUtility(on the FW HD) to repair permissions on the FW HD. It started repairing files by the hundreds. The lines flew by so fast I couldn't read them all. When it was done I ran DiskUtility again to make sure it got everything and the same thing happened, repairing literally hundreds of files. When it was done I scrolled back through the list and noticed that most of the items were NOT repaired. Most of the files said "Owner & Group not corrected on . . . . Operation Not Permitted".

I can startup using the FW HD without problem. I used DiskUtility to repair permissions on my Internal HD immediately before I did the backup.

Why won't DiskUtility repair the permissions on the FW HD? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Doug

BTW i'm using a G4 1/25 GHz with OS 10.3.2

I know you can use terminal with the command "sudo diskutil repairPermissions " (space at the end there) and then drag the icon for the drive into the window to complete the path of your drive. I'm assuming this will force it to make the changes.

I have no idea why Disk Utility won't work though.

(I guess is that I faintly recall you can turn ignore permission for an external drive... maybe that box got checked somehow...)

When I go to the Finder 'Get Info' I do not see a box to check saying Ignore Permissions, is it hidden somewhere?

Thanks,

Doug

OK, found the check box and it was checked as you guessed. Unchecked the box and booted into FW HD and repaired permissions. This time it worked fine.

Thanks
