i have reinstalled my OS from cd. i installed 10.2, then i tried to run the software update. software update says theres the 10.2.8 update along with other things but when i try to install the 10.2.8 update it says there was an error or somthing. so i tried to download first then install it, and part way through the installer says theres been an error and try again. i have tried to reinstall the os a couple times along with useing the update cd first but the cd update just opens then quits. anyway, i cant figure this out, any ideas?
thanks.

If you can't be more specific about "error or something" I doubt people will have many helpful ideas.

sorry for the vaugness of my question. more info: im installing on a powerbook 500 w/ firewire. im installing onto an external firewire hard drive b/c my internall hard drive is dead. the installer goes through the examining package contents, then configuring installations, then about 1/6th the way through it all it says "there were errors installing the software" above the progress bar, then under the bar it says "please try again."
the last few lines of the installer log says:
_touchModDates

Whenever I come across a system that won't update to the latest version of Mac OS X via a "combo" updater, I usually go to Apple's support page and search for the updates one by one with some search terms like 10.2.1 download, here's a start (the 10.2.1 download page on Apple's Knowledge base):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120147
I've had computers where combo updaters would fail, but stepping through each 10.x.x install separately results in success. Hopefully you can get the combo updater to work after about two or three successions of those single updaters.
Head back here and let us know what happens.
