I tried downloading AirySynth to use with GarageBand. It comes in a .gtar archive, and when Stuffit is done with it, it appears as a folder and not a component bundle. This, of course, means that GarageBand won't recognize it. Is there any way to get it back into a bundle? Alternately, should I decompress it with something else besides Stuffit?

A gtar archive won't conserve the any special info about packages so you won't have more luck with another extractor. I think it's more important is that you put it into the right place like /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components.

Check the Finder info about that folder/bundle, it might say it is a package even if it looks like a folder.

Nope. GarageBand doesn't see it, and the finder info reports it as a folder, not a package.

I wonder if that file then has ever worked for anyone.
Try creating a file named PkgInfo containing exactly the 8 bytes BNDL???? (check the length with Get info) and put it in the Contents folder of that package, the next time the Finder checks that folder it might show as a package.

Shows up as a folder on my machine too. I suspect that this may be the developer's problem.
However, you may be able to force the component to show up as a bundle by using XRay (available on VersionTracker) to set its Package bit.

There's no need to set the package bit since OS X decides rather by the extension of the foldername and the folder contents, but if you want and have the developertools installed you can as well use the /Developer/Tools/SetFile. The package bit for folders is the same the bundle bit is for files.
However, it's also possible that it just won't work because of an incompatibility to a newer OS version or because of some other bug.

This last appears to be the case. After getting the system to recognize it as a package, GarageBand still doesn't recognize it. Oh well.
