Hey Everyone,
I wasn't sure if this should go under "pbook forums" or "os x" problems.. but I think its the system, so here goes.

Almost every single time I turn my computer on (about 85% of the time) It gets to my network setting up (in the bootup panel) and freezes, or gives me a "kernal panic" screen. In any case, I must hold down the power and restart. Then, about 40% of the time, the second bootup doesn't work. It always works by the third.

I am not that "stupid" so this is what I have done, to no results.

1) Unplugged everything before powering up except for the power cable.

2) Deleted all programs that launch on Start-up

3) Removed all programs that modify Panther, and clean-installed panther.

4) Removed the extra Ram.

I don't know what to do. I have done all the "dummy things" apple says. Including deleting system cache, reseting pram, etc, etc, etc. Its like my al book just likes to be turned on a few times first. Sigh.

Please help.
yep.

If you've performed a clean install and still have the same problem, that's a serious issue indeed. Backup your important files and reinitialize the drive. If you continue to experience the same problem, you can be sure its a hardware malfunction.

Back up everything.

My dad's pbook was doing the same thing. eventually it wouldn't start up at all. We managed to start it with an os9 disk and get the files off with apple talk.

A reformat and reinstall fixed it but it still acts flaky. We're getting him a new hard drive.

You might run tech tool or something that will test the drive.

Have you tried "Permission repairs"?
Have you tred to run DiskWarrior?
Have you tried with setting up another user?
Have you tried a re-install?

Just some thoughts. Could be a hardware malfunction, in that case get it back to Apple.

Try restarting with the shift key held down. This boots you into Safe mode. If this works OK, then it is a user installed app, utility, driver, etc. that is causing the problem.

a partially inserted airport card will sometimes cause a kernel panic. at least according to some articles i read a while back. check to make sure the card is completely inserted, which takes a small amount of force actually.

i believe this is/was more a problem with factory installed cards.

might be worth a shot.
