I have the same problem whenever a server is disconnected before it's ejected. To fix Finder without restarting, I have to force quit it twice. To do that, bring up the Force Quit menu, select Finder and then "relaunch"...close the Force Quit menu, and open it again and reselect finder and select relaunch.

I've also used Activity Monitor to "unhang" a program. Not sure exactly how that works, but usually when I select the frozen program in the activity list, it will fix itself. You can also Force quit from the Activity Monitor as well.

Hope this helps.

Still glad I made the switch.
I gotta have more cowbell.

And always go to http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/ when you find a problem like this.

My XP machine, that I have constantly mounted, decides to lose it's network connection or crash about 10 times a day, thus either stalling my Finder or stalling the whole computer. Lately I've been lucky and the Finder will say it got disconnected.

This is a problem that's plagued Mac OS X since its original release. When a network volume becomes unavailable (whether SMB, AFP, FTP, iDisk, or whatnot), it will cause the Finder to go berserk. Not much you can really do about it except Force Quit/Relaunch and wait. Annoying really.

Thanks for that, I just left them some feedback. I also hope this problem gets fixed soon.

Like someone else said, this has been a problem in OS X since day one. Apple has known about it, I've sent some irate emails myself. And I was heartbroken to see it's still an issue in Panther.
Holding out hope for a 10.3.3 fix, but if they couldn't fix it in Panther to begin with, I wonder if they really are making it a priority...

Yes, why should they just choose 10.3.3 to fix it. Maybe they don't want to fix it at all and rather make some new graphical effects instead.
