I like the way OS X can display the brushed metal in windows etc, and wondered if I could extract that TIF from a package somewhere? I had a look through Safari's package out of curiosity but I assume it's a system thing. Where would I look and is it possible to get hold of it? It would be for personal use only.

Any help appreciated.

Why don't you just take a screen shot?

I'd the original so I can play around with it. I'm assuming there's a square patch of metal that the OS scales to fit.

actually there's 2 parts to it. There's the brushed metal and a "overlay", sit there, look at it closely, and resize the window.. you'll notice the texture gets tiled but the 'bright part' extended.. fun stuff

The problem is, it's not as simple as a texture. There is a TIFF file (it's probably somewhere in /System, or you could find an old version of iTunes and get it from there), but that's not the whole story. As others have mentioned, the pattern is tiled, but then a brightness gradient is applied to make the middle seem brighter than the left and right edges. This part is done programatically; there is no file to extract for it.

If you have the developer tools installed you can use Interface Builder to easily create a blank window in a size you want and get whichever part of the texture you like from it.
