Ok, I am fairly new to Mac OS X, but I know that in 10.2 you could specify what type of format you wanted to create a new disk image as:

- HFS+
- UNIX
- MS-DOS

Well, under Disk Utility on my iBook G4 running 10.3.2, I am not shown any of these options. All I am given under the drop down box for "FORMAT" is read/write and sparse disk image.

Am I missing something or is something wrong with my installation of Panther?

By default, the disk image is created in HFS+ (Journaled) formatting. You can reformat the image though. Just select the image file in Disk Utility as you would a volume, and the same formatting/partitioning items should be there.
