I would have guessed that this would be discussed to death here, but I couldn't find anything in the search.
::shrug::
Anyway I have a 867 PB with 640 MB of ram, running 10.3.2 and I often have a lot of text input lag when typing in text boxes in Safari. I heard that it could be the autofill function, so I turned it off, but it didn't seem to have much effect. Any advice on how to fix this?

I have that only *occasionally* - and not even on same site (autofill OFF except for username/pword) .
I have suspected that it was when the page was running some javascript auto-update or something, because the pause is usually followed by normal response to typing.
Are you guys finding that its ALWAYS unresponsive (like while typing in a MESSAGE box to post on these forums, for example?

I have noticed that I get text lag only when there are a lot of animated .gifs (smilies mostly) on the page. Safari seems to have a lot of trouble rendering animated .gif files and stalls when typing or scrolling. Others I have talked to seemed to notice the same problem.

When posting on these forums, I only get the lag if the smilies are actually visible on the screen. Try it! Resize your window (or scroll) so that the smilies are visible, try typing... lag. Now scroll or resize so that they are not visible... no lag!
Given this, I'm pretty sure that the problem is related to animated gifs.

Yes, it only happens when there are lots of animations visible. It started with Safari 1.2 and hasn't been fixed in 1.2.1.

And I don't get it on these pages now that I have PithHelmet set to let animated gifs roll only ONCE.
Does seem that Apple needs to work on the balance of cpu sharing between these two processes.

You can turn off the animated "instant similies" through your vB preferences page. The downside is that you no longer get any easy access to board code (for things like links) - you have to input it manually instead.

I'm trying it now. Sure enough, all the gifs in this window animated once and now I am having no lag.
Thanks for the tip.

Lags horribly on my 600MHz iBook and 900MHz blue & white G3.
Very minor lag on my G5. I can only see the lag on the G5 if I hold a key down and let it auto-repeat. Its jerky... At first I thought it was my bluetooth keyboard, but never occurs when there aren't animated GIF on-screen.
Safari still needs a bit of work. No such lag with Firefox.
