Right as I saw that the 10.3.3 update is available I started to download it via the Softwareupdate. Then I went to lunch and as I came back and wanted to exit the Screensaver with a push on my bluetooth mouse, my PB said: "Something has failed, you have to restart" (you know that center translucent square).
After the restart it said, that it couldnt login something, however it showed my desktop. but my ethernet and airport were gone. (no network cable attached, no airport card installed). "about this mac" states, 10.3.2 installed. Then I logged out and everytime I tried to relogin, the login app prompts, that a problem prevents from logging in. Then I made a big mistake and I rebooted another time. Since then, it boots (gray apple with spinning circle) however at the time it should start the services the "no permission" sign appears and nothing else happens.
Fortunaly it boots from CD, however I would like to rescue my install, because it has taken 2 weeks till I tuned it and I've installed all the software,
If I boot in the single user mode it always states: "still waiting for root device". Sounds not good.
Perhaps anyone with the same problem. perhaps already solved the problem? javascript :smilie(' ')

Boot from the CD, repair permissions, then repair the drive.

Happened to me too. No Airport and no Ethernet.
HERE'S WHAT I DID (sorry don't mean to shout )
1) Download the update ( www.versiontracker.com) from some other computer and burn it on a disc or load it on an external drive.
2) Insert disc/Connect drive
3) Install update.
4) Enjoy!

... but my 17" 1GHz powerbook is hosed in a different way. iApps won't launch, including disk utility & installer. Repairing the disk & permissions from the panther install disk didn't help so I"m doing an archive & install.
But enough about me. In my experience, kernel panics are often caused by hardware trouble, so try reseating any RAM & disconnect everything (except the power supply, of course).
You could also try repairing from the CD if that will boot,
Good luck & hope this helps!

You may want to have a look at this Apple Konwledge Base article that outlines what the "Prohibitory Sign" means and steps to take to remedy the problem.
Good luck and keep us posted…

Perhaps I should say that my woes may be self inflicted. I performed the update while another user (me!) was also logged in so that I had issues on the restart.
Tried to rerun the update from a burned CD but no joy as installer is one of the hosed apps!

An interrupted install/update process is generally bad voodoo for whatever it is you're installing/updating, doubly so if that happens to be system software.
Boot from your system CD, and repair your HD and your permissions. Then, try downloading the standalone installer to another computer and burning it to CD, then install the standalone update from the CD.
If that doesn't work, you should be able to archive and install without too much trouble. That will keep all your apps, data, and personal preferences, and create a new system folder, but keeps your old one around, so anything in there that you might need can just be copied over again. It's a pain, but not as big of one as it could be.

can you open Disk Utility to repair permissions and such? If not, try sudo diskutil repairPermissions / in terminal, and/or run fsck -fy in single user mode (cmd-s on boot).

That's exactly what's happening right now. Just slapped the second disk in.
More as it happens.
Don't touch that dial!

Too late. I've bitten the bullet & done an archive & install. Seems OK, just going to try updating.
Thanks anyway.

thanks for your replies. finally I've got my powerbook back to work After several boots from the CD with repairing permission, not to forget resetting the PRAM in the open firmware, nothing worked.
I was quiete desperated. Then I suddenly wanted to boot into open firmware, however I misshit and pressed, controll, shift, and o+f. After that it started up in the safe mode and I was able to login. Then I've burned the 10.3.3 Update on the 12" PB of my cohabitent.
After a restart, everything worked as estimated, the update was installed and everey app started without problem.
To be honest I dont know why it worked. however my PB is back to live after 2 hours of worry.
