Too bad you are going to have to pay $129 to see it...
And it better be better then that crap they pulled in 1994
I was screaming at the top of my lungs "COMPUTER, WHAT TIME IS IT!!!!!"
Maybe (hopefully) we'll see an overhaul of the entire Speech Recognition engine.

I didn't read anything about speech recognition, but one can hope. The only thing I saw was for screen reading. It sounds like the primary interface will be with the keyboard.

Well I doubt that it's done yet, so it's possible they are working on a new engine.

I remember Steve asking for someone to sell them one or work with them a few Stevenotes back so it's possible. I'd love to see it (or speak to it).

wow that is too bad, especially since they probably won't include any other feature, right?

when i was in london i was playing around with the speech thing with my cypriot friend. no matter how loudly she shouted "computer, what time is it" it would not recognize her accent.

Actually, built in speech recognition works well for me, though English is not my primary language. So, it probably has improved some since 1994

Eh, my dog is FAR better at interpreting human speech than my "supercomputer".
I've long found it interesting that the Speech PrefPane has a pop-up to select the Recognition System. Says to me that they're just waiting (hoping?) someone will code a better one and plug it into the OS.

I hope Apple takes that as incentive to provide text to speech for non English languages as well.

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Under "Physical/Motor"
Code:
Speech Recognition & Talking Alerts
Speakable items lets you command and control the computer using your voice, without requiring you to train the computer. You can use commands to open and close programs, navigate the menu bar, switch between programs, control application-specific items, to enter keyboard shortcuts and speak front window controls such as check box names, radio button names, list items and buttons.
Hmmm, this could be interesting... controlling iTunes (which is piped to your TV) with a bluetooth headset...
Cool computer sayings (or things you could do with your computer, a bluetooth headset and a few X11 items).
Me: "Computer, I'm home" - Turns on lights, unlocks doors, opens windows etc.
Computer: "You have an incoming email from XYZ, would you like me to read it to you?"
Computer: "You have an incoming audio chat from XYZ, would you like to accept it?
Computer: "Just a reminder that XYZ is scheduled for noon today"
Computer: "There is unscheduled activity in your home, would you like to access your video camera?"
Computer: "A car just pulled in to the driveway"
Hmmm, the future could be cool...

That's fair enough, I can barely understand a full on brummie accent.

(Use "quote" next time and the page layout will not get screwed up ... but you knew that )
