Both on my g4, and my brother's imac, and especially since updating to OS 10.3 back in October, yet another issue i've caught is the pro speakers actually halt the machine's booting if plugged in. When plugged in normally (I've checked and double checked this), the machine will do it's usual apple logo bootup, and then as soon as that goes away, the OS pauses at a lighter than normal blue screen, and if you don't do anything will take as long as 15 minutes to realize that the pro speakers aren't being detected and go on with it's booting.

In 10.2, this didn't happen, instead you got an error within a few seconds of the machine finishing bootup.

I find it odd, while my g4 has had the pro speaker error almost all it's life, my bro's imac NEVER had the problem before, and while that doesn't bug me too badly, why does it do this?

The only way i can get around it is by unplugging the speakers, waiting for the machine to finish booting, and a simple technique since plugging the speakers in again will result in a roughly 5 minute timeout if I do anything audio related (of course nothing happens with them until i do something audio related), unless I do this..

Plug in speakers, adjust volume, no volume meter comes up. Unplug speakers and the volume meter starts doing it's thing. Plug in speakers quickly and the amp has switched it's mode.

This method works, but is annoying, 10.2 never required such silly stuff since it'd only take a few seconds to give the error.

Moreso why is the error happening in the first place? Both machines have always booted fine on startup and I never *touched* the pro speakers on the imac until this happened to begin with (they were plugged in from day one and the imac was almost never moved).

The biggest part of the 10.3 problem, however, is the fact the machine insists on throwing up a blue screen and sitting there like a moron when the speakers are plugged in.

Granted that, this can happen with nothing else but the screen plugged in, and so far I've had no problems related to using the speakers (regular analog out yields the same uptimes and the same crashes)....

Anyone? I'm positive it's not a hardware problem as I've checked 3 different sets of speakers on the g4 and imac now, tried them on different machines without problems half the time, and yeah, the g4 seems fine with it until the OS boots..

It just bugs the heck out of me. These are the 2 bugs (other thread included) that have really gotten to me with 10.3

I have a G4 Cube with the pro speakers (and radeon and a Powerlogix 1 GHz cpu upgrade). I have never experienced any of the problems mentioned above. Now running 10.3.3 and have run OSX since 10.0 with all incremantal and major updates.

However, I have since 10.2 (i believe, possibly only since 10.3) experienced that the volume drops to about half, despite the fact that I have max volume. I believe it is related to the powering of the USB bus. Probably an electrical problem where the current drops beyond the spec. The Pro speakers requires a specially powered USB outlet, for instance, the volume will be inaudible if connected to a USB hub. The problem goes away (for a while 10 minutes to a day or two) when the speakers are unplugged and then plugged in again.

I have also experienced a lot of cracking and popping sounds since 10.3.2 and now also with 10.3.3. Am I the only one? Is this hardware related or due to the OSX version/sound drivers?

Any comments will be of interest.

Bingo. While your pro speakers may work on the iMac, they certainly aren't intended to work with all iMacs. They require a specific voltage, on the USB bus to work correctly.

Read more about it in some of these links.

I think you guys are mixing up two different speakers. The Cube speakers are USB powered, the Apple Pro Speakers are not and don't require an USB port.

Had both but none of the problems you mentionend.

Just goes to show you what I know... sorry ! I have 3 sets of the Cube pro speakers, along with 3 cubes and thought all pro speakers were all the same.
