Hi,

I have a friend with a Pismo who keeps having a weird problem.

His system was kernel panicking on boot. He decided to reformat the drive and re-install.

now - a couple of days later it has started panicking on boot again (at a slightly different time in the boot cycle.)

We've tried removing any extra RAM and it still panics. I tried attaching it to my PB via FW-target mode and running Disc Utility - here are the results (It cannot repair the drive)

Repairing disk for “Panther Padus”
Mounting Disk(S,"Checking HFS Plus volume.",0)
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Keys out of order
Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Panther Padus could not be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

Repair attempted on 1 volume
0 HFS volumes repaired
1 volume could not be repaired
We just tried booting in single user mode and running fsck -it said that the volume could not be repaired.

Is the Disc Physically scrëwed?
You know it makes sense. ☼ ☼ ☼ Growl.

I would try to get ahold of a copy of DiskWarrior.

"Keys out of order" is a HFS error discussion that Disk Utility and fsck_hfs cannot repair. DiskWarrior however can.

If this (or any other) error occurs frequently, the physical condition of the drive might no longer be good and your friend might want to have a look at its S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Utility.
