Since 10.3.2, I'm having a very frustrating problem with connecting to my other machine using afp. When I use the "connect to server" menu in the Finder and enter in my username and password and then select the volume, the finder just sits there and waits with the spinning wheel indefinitely.

I have done an extensive amount of investigation into this but still have not come up with a solution. Is there anyone else who is having this problem or who knows how to fix it?

More details:

-my client machine is an iBook 600 with 10.3.3 installed and my server is a G4 400 also with 10.3.3.

-one user account on the iBook can connect without problems but all other users see this problem using the same server username and password

-the problem also occurs when connecting to a linux afp server which elimates the server as the problem

-The problem also materializes with the mount_afp command in Terminal. When running mount_afp afp://user:password@machine/VolumeA /Volumes/VolumeA, the program never returns and just waits. When running the same command with the same arguments on the one "good user's" account, the command finishes successfully and mounts the Volume.

-brand new user accounts (admins and non-admins) also have the same problem

-I've deleted all the remote mount point directories in /Volumes and still have the problem

-Connecting using SMB works fine for all users

-I have run fix perms in the Disk Utility and it doesn't help.

Why would one user's account work when all others fail? Is there some afp configuration information stored per user on the client machine?

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've just run into this problem and have searched here, osxfaq, macosxhints, apple discussions and googled it (nearest useful info I found was this on an apple mailing list: http://lists.apple.com/archives/maco.../msg02314.html)

However, I still haven't found a solution. On my powerbook connecting to my imac through a AEBS and a router I can connect fine in my normal users account, but in my admin account I get the spinning beachball forever.

Should I just forget AFP and go with SMB?

I should add I'm on 10.3.8 and that this problem has just materialised all of a sudden (I used to be able to connect fine). I guess this should be in networking, but the original question was posed here.

You know what, the thing that annoys me about osx is that it "just works". Because it means when it doesn't "just work" NO ONE has a real clue how to fix it because it usually "just works".

Tried a boat load of stuff, looked at log files and scratched me head.

Finally gave in and went with SMB. It "just works"
