Hi guyz,

I wanted to use my good old PPC 8600 as a UNIX server for FTP and Mail.
How good would it handle the job?
Any experience or comments would be appreciated.

PS: I do not know a thing about UNIX, I am an Art Director-HardCoreUser of Mac since 1989.
It is a friend of mine that want to do the install, and he also talked about another hardware, but I do not have the ca$h right now for it, and I do not want to end up with a Dell!!!

It would work just fine. Technically, you could install Darwin on it so that any Unix you need to do would also work on your OS X Mac. You could even install OS X w/XPostFacto.

thanks!
I thought about osX on it.
Then I found NetPresenz
http://www.copyzone.net/setup/index.html
and installed it..
But it would take me too much of my time to handle all this plus find sofware for mail server, etc.. I simply not have time for this so I have am using WASD services! ;o)

Well, you'd be using "Unix" anyway most of the time, so I'd go for Linux. Most packages are easily available for Linux, so you don't need to fiddle with dependencies or not working packages.

Install webmin, and you can administer your computer from any other computer in the network in your favorite web browser. Enable sshd to log in remotely.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
