My system: 17" 800mhz G4 iMac running 10.2.8 with 768MB RAM.

My problem: Anytime I am running a VISE based installer, as soon as it either gets to or starts with "Searching: Macintosh HD", the installer freezes and sits on the spinning globe until it's completely timed out. During this time my system is also very unresponsive. I've searched around but can't find this to be any sort of known issue. Anyone know anything?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated as I have a somewhat substantial amount of software that I'm quite desperate to get installed. All other installers work fine for me, fyi.

Thanks!

Assuming it is the same one, it is a known issue - there have been a few Macfixit.com articles on it and an Apple knowledge base article.

The VISE installer is doing something truly dumb - it is searching your entire network for the install location. If you want it to proceed properly, unmount any servers and your iDisk if you have one and/or disconnect from your network. The installer should work OK after that.

Thank you for the response.

Unfortunately that was apparently not the problem. After completely turning off Airport the installation performed the same. I have actually let the installer sit for 4 hours after turning off Airport to see if it really was just searching through the 80GB hard drive, but it still performed exactly the same.

I have contacted VISE (who were VERY fast to get back to me), unfortunately all they really said is that it was more a problem with the specific program installer than their software (which I don't believe is true.)

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Ryan

Well, to test both a work-around as well as my theory that it will install on other machines, even if they are also running OS 10.2.8, I installed the program on my brothers iMac DV400 and it worked fine. Then I simply burned the installed folders onto a CD and placed them into my applications folder and it works fine. I'm still fairly perplexed as to why any of the Installer VISE based installers won't install on MY machine.

Any additional thoughts or suggestions are still very much appreciated.

P.S. His machine had the network fully functional the entire time as well.

Argh, VISE sucks. Hopefully it will eventually die and everyone will start using the ordinary .pkg packages. The .pkg format's File Find feature uses LaunchServices to find existing versions of apps instead of having to search every drive.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I have to admit I definitely agree with you. Everyone tells me that VISE are the best installers, but if anything I've had more problems (regardless of the system) with VISE installers than anything else. I suppose they can be a little more user friendly, but I personally prefer the .pkg format more as well.

Who on earth said that?! VISE are certainly not the best installers.
