i'm running quark 6 & photoshop in 10.3.2 on a powermac.
when i work with large files, (especially in quark), everything slows down.
and yesterday i got an "out of memory" error.
is this just a cry for ram?
or is there anything else i should look for?
thanx!

so, any other ideas? anyone?
quark is better since it was just updated, but everything slows down when i work on large projects (a brochure, for example), with large image files...
makes for a pretty unpleasant experience
(and makes me long for os9 days)

no, 640 megs just doesn't cut it these days for running heavy-duty apps like Quark and Photoshop (and both together).
I would upgrade to at least 1GB if not 1.5GB. I guarantee you'll be a happy camper!

If you're getting Out of Memory errors, then yes, you could use more RAM. You're obviously using more than you have. I'd guess you're also low on hard drive space as well if you're seeing those errors. Otherwise, OS X would be compensating for the lack of RAM without you seeing it (it'd be slow, but you wouldn't get errors). That's probably why it's OK for a bit, then it slows way down, then you get the error. You're using the RAM you have, then using the disk space you have, then finally getting screwed because you ran out of both.
Step 1: buy more RAM
Step 2: buy a larger hard drive (or install your OS onto a larger drive; or move your swap space to a larger drive)
Good luck.
