You could just (1) put X11.app in your login items, and then (2) add gaim to your .xinitrc file.

Or (3) Use Adium: http://www.adiumx.com

Adium 2 is based on gaim's core, libgaim, which allows it to connect to many different networks (AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, etc). Adium's coming along very nicely. I download new binaries nearly daily, and it's reached a very mature state. It's written in Cocoa, so it runs under Mac OS X rather than X11... give it a try.

you could just make a shell script file
Code:
#!/bin/sh /usr/bin/open-x11 gaim
save it with the extension .command and make it a startup item. I think that should work.

(4) Use Psi. Uses Qt, no X-11.

Isn't Psi Jabber-only?

It is, but you can always use MSN/AIM/ICQ transports with it.

But then that makes it not 'Jabber only'
I've used Jabber since I discovered it around .87 version release.
I have had zero problems chatting with all my AIM, Yahoo!, ICQ and MSN contacts - they don't even know I'm not using AIM|Yahoo!|MSN, etc.
One of it's biggest draws for me is aesthetic - Qt allows it to look like whatever OS I'm using GUI (I've used it under Windoze, Linux and Mac), and all the same functions and features are right there, no matter what computing platform.
