is there a script to quickly toggle show and hide hidden files? It's kind of annoying to open Onyx, Cocktail or whatever in order to do that.

If you run Pathfinder in place of Finder, one of the many, many improvements is that viewing invisible files is a menu item, which can be set to a hot key.

Type Command-Shift-G then the name of an invisible folder.

Example: Command-Shift-G and enter /etc

You then can see everything in the invisible folder.

In Terminal

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true;killall Finder

To hide the hidden files again change the "true" to "false".
