Has the option been unchecked by chance under "View Options"? If not, un-check and re-check the option again and see if it comes back...

I had this happen a couple of times in Jaguar after disconnecting from a network drive. The option to show item info was still checked but, quite categorically, it didn't. I don't think I found a direct solution but it seemed to sometimes come back when connecting to the network drive again - and then I just decided to turn off the option altogether, so I haven't seen it happen in Panther .

Anyway, I found it kind of silly that it would sometimes say like: 27.94 ... GB free - at certain font sizes. I just had a look at it on Panther and I guess that got sorted out. But I saw another silly one earlier today (unrelated) - I found out that you can ctrl-click 'Other' system preference panes, and then get the option to remove them, except that it says Remove "...ference Pane for mine .

That's a permission problem...

Try to run "fix permissions" with disk utility.
