Got a teacher with a PowerBook G3 (Wallstreet) that has suddenly lost the ability to use the trackpad in OS X, but works in OS 9. What is the quickest way to fix this issue? Running OS 10.2.8.

does he have a mouse plugged in? There's a setting in system prefs to disable the trackpad while there's a mouse connected. if not, try disconnecting any peripherals anyway in case that's confusing it. Beyond that, i don't know.

Nope, no mouse. It's not a mechanical failure, it is a software problem only in OS X.

Try creating a new user and see if it works there. If it does, you can track the problem down to a preference file in the users Library/Preferences.

If not, reinstall OS X (you can either do an Archive and Install, or just install over it, you won't lose your settings either way).

Mine just did this too.

Restart
Immediatly hold down the "Command", "Option", "O", and "F" keys.
Wait for the white screen to show. Type:
"reset-nvram". Press return.
Then type "reset-all". Press return.
Viola!
You might have to boot off a CD and reselect the startup disk after you do this.
