I can't seem to get Apple System Profiler to launch. When I went under the Apple Menu to "About This Mac" the window pops up with the button "More Info...". Clicked the button but it doesn't do anything.

Then I tried going to the Applications/Utilities/ and double clicked on Apple System Profiler and it "fakes" the launch but nothing happens. I tried restarting, repaired permissions using Cocktail, tried logging into another account and launching it but no luck. I moved the icon to the Dock and tried to launch by clicking it from there but it bounces a couple of times and does nothing. Any suggestions?

Cheers

In order to tell what's wrong, we need a console log. Run the Console app (in /Applications/Utilities), then try to launch ASP and see what shows up in the console. Post it here.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I had the same problem on two of my Macs after installing the official 10.3.3 upgrade over developer releases. I copied System Profiler from another Mac which went from 10.3.2 to 10.3.3 combo updated and it worked fine.
SP had a generic application icon, so I suspect something went wrong during the upgrade that affected only the app itself.

Here's what I get:

/usr/libexec/crashreporterd: crashdump terminated by signal 5

I should have mentioned that I'm using a 15" FP iMac running 10.2.8 and ASP is version 3.0.1

Okay, that's not what I expected...

I guess the first thing I would try would be to trash ASP's preference file. If that doesn't help, you could try reinstalling as SMacTech did. You can use my app, Pacifist (link in my sig), to extract the app from the packages on the install CD.

Hmmm.....any idea where this file would be located? Is this something I need to do through the terminal? Thanks for your help on this. It seems like a random thing to have happen.

Look in your home/Library/Preferences folder. There you'll find a file called com.apple.SystemProfiler.plist. Throw it out. Also, there's a file called com.apple.asp.plist in my Preferences folder - not sure if it's related to SystemProfiler, but it might be. Throw these files out and see if it helps.

Weird....neither of these files exist. There's one for Classic and I'm able to run the Classic ASP. I can't imagine what went wrong. I can say with certainty that I've run ASP before so I know it functioned at one time.

Hmm, you sure you were looking in the Library/Preferences folder in your home folder rather than the one on the root of your hard drive?

I looked in both the home and hard drive Preferences files. I also searched using the terms "profiler", "asp", and, "plist". It has vaporized apparently.

Okay, that's weird. You say you've run it before, so it should have created those pref files.

Do you have write access to the Preferences folder? Could you try repairing permissions using Disk Utility?

I had tried repairing permissions using Cocktail but I'll give Disk Utility a shot too. I'm copying ASP from a unit at work and I'll try that if another repair of permissions doesn't do it. Would it make sense to copy the preferences file for ASP from the Dual G4 PowerMac at work and place it into the Prefs folder on my iMac at home? My suspicion is that this wouldn't really accomplish anything but I'm grasping at straws here.

I don't think importing another preference file would help.

Have you checked the "ByHost" folder in your Preferences folder? I doubt it would be in there, but we might as well look, as it's really strange that you don't have a preference file for ASP.

Well, I copied the ASP from another Mac as suggested above. I trashed the one on my iMac and put the copied ASP in its place. It runs! However, when it launches there's a tiny but audible screech sound coming from the hard drive. Also, when I go under the Apple menu and choose "About this Mac" and hit the "More Info..." button it doesn't launch. How bizarre is that? I can launch by double-clicking the icon though.

And the other strange thing is that now that I've launched it, I still can't find a plist file for ASP.

Thanks for the help CharlesS and SMacTech! I think maybe the safest thing for me to do is just upgrade to Panther.

Update: After a restart, the "More Info..." button is now functional. I still get an audible screech noise from the hard drive. And there still is no plist file for ASP. FWIW, when I launch ASP the Console gives:
