I posted this previously under "Peripherals" section but so far no one has been able to help - wondering if this forum can advise as it is also a OS 10 problem / question

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else is using an Epson 4870 scanner on their Mac?

I have only had it about 10 days and I used it first on my 20" iMac but it slowed things down - trying to multi task- Photoshop, iView reviewing images, browsing the web etc plus it crashed a few times - the first time ever the OS10.3.3 went down - restarted the system

-so I reverted to using it on my 12:" Powerbook which is off line and often not in use- figured it would have to work more speedily if only doing the one task but it is SLOW - if I do a straight scan it takes about 8-12 minutes to do 8 by 35 mm slides at a time but if I toss in dust removal and/or colour correction I am looking at well over an hour to do 8 slides - and some times I am sure it just loses the plot and sits there gasping for air - it just hangs and hangs to the point I force quit

Both machines have 768 Mb RAM ,the iMac is 1.25 GHz and the Powerbook1GHz CPU speed - which I would have hoped meant adequate - so I am wondering if anyone else is using the scanner - or similar - and what their performance times are- it took over 12 hours yesterdaty to do about 50 slides --yawn!!

Oh yes - in typical Epson style I had to download the latest drivers before it would work at all -and do not even think of using it through Photoshop etc. - pain!! One slide at a time or crashville!
I am using it directly through Epson Scan

Any ideas or suggestions on how to speed things up would be appreciated-- seriously would a G5 do it faster or is it a scanner related speed problem?
hope this is the right place for this posting

thanks
Ron
** I have given up trying to use it with any image correction -ICE or dust removal as it is so slow I am too old to wait that long- I might be finished before it is !! .A straight scan with no mods is still taking about 10-15 minutes for 6 slides
