In the words of the parody Apple switcher: I deleted "some sort of important system file".
The two files are called "status" and "status-old" and are in:
/sw/var/lib/dpkg/
If anyone could just open up their terminal, type in 'open /sw/var/lib/dpkg/' and email me those two files it would be GREATLY appreciated, because I can't use apt-get or fink cause of this and it's a biatch.

Ouch!
The "status-old" file was a partial backup of the "status" file.
The problem with using mine or someone elses "status" file is that it is most likely anywhere from a little different to very different than what you have. Using mine could lead to severe problems later on.
The simplest solution is to completely re-install fink.
Another solution is to install fink on another Mac. Don't add anything but basic fink. Then when it is done use the "status" file from there. It is OK if the "status" file has a subset of what you really have... problems come when it is a superset.
See: http://www.linuxworld.com/story/32607_p.htm
Has some info on how to do this. In the article he also mentions a way to possibly recreate the files from scratch. You will have to adjust the methods there for your system (prepend "/sw" to any thing that begins with "/var")
Good luck.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to delete your /sw/ folder and completely reinstall fink. I've done that a number of times when I've messed around with things a little too much.

Thanks a bunch utidjian! I'll try that tonight.
edit: lol, here's a quote from the article... i really screwed myself over:
"Most important of all is the /var/lib/dpkg/status file".

Okay, we're going to have to suspend your 'rm' privileges for a week, and let this be a lesson to you!

What i would do:
1. move sw/ to sw.bak/
2. Reinstall fink
3. move sw/ to sw.new/
4. move sw.bak/ to sw/
5. try to copy the missing parts from sw.new/ to sw/
