Went to click "BBEdit", accidentally hit "Blacklight", the old screensaver-as-background application. Screen went black. Pressing keys made beeping noises. alt tab = beep, alt-control-escape = nothing, alt-shift-control-escape = no frontmost application quitting. alt-control-power, i see the machine begin to quit applications, the screensaver being quit, TextEdit with an unsaved report due tomorrow quitting without saving, and the machine restarts.
I've deleted the evil program, and I'm out a report. True, I didn't save, but I hadn't finished half of it yet, and I wasn't expecting a crash on OS X (haven't seen one for over a year at least). I'm pretty angry right now, but I'd like to find out how I can avoid any unhappy application forcing a restart on me. All I know of is EscapePod by Ambrosia which hasn't been updated in quite a long time. I can't quite ctrl+alt+F1 out of Aqua to a console like X11, so what's the fix?

Sometimes Command-Option-Esc won't bring up the dialog but it does invoke the command, I have found that I can hit the key combo then hit return and the front most app will quit.
I have found, depending on the app, that the force quit window can't be drawn on top of everything but it is in fact active and hitting the return key will do the job. I find this happens mostly with games.

I thought of that after the restart, wasn't sure if I had hit enter after the dialog didn't appear, though I probably did trying to hit every key ;-). I'm in the process of rewriting that report, so I won't test it right now, but I'll take the application out of the trash and post results tomorrow.
Went through and trashed all my old applications ("old" is relitive, we're talking Jaguar for BlackLight) and updated things like Aquamon (don't use it, will start again though, cool app). Still, an application doesn't need to be outdated to cause a problem like this, a bug could easily happen in an application that would cause it to take keyboard/mouse input....
kinda missing macsbug right now....sad, isn't it?
