How much Capacity should a Hard Disk show (if it is supposed to be 60GB)?

I have G4 Powerbook - 60GB, 512RAM

Also How much disk space should OSX take up with a basic installation?

I have just had to re-install (erase and install) my operating system as I had problems with "overlapped extent allocation" so it is essentially a clean system
but now with just the basic operating system in place the total hard drive capacity is reading 55.9GB and OS X.3 is taking up about 3GB leaving my hard disk available space at 52.8GB.
I am concerned that the overall hard disk capacity is showing at 55.9 which seems to little and I am worried thatsome of my actual hard disk space (hardware) is faulty?

Thanks in advance for any advice . . .

You can do the math yourself. They tell you 60GB, but that's with 1000B = 1KB. In reality, everything is in powers of 2, so 1024B = 1KB. So their 60"GB" = 60x10^9B.
60x10^9B/1024 = 58,593,750KB
above/1024 = 57,220MB
above/1024 = 55.9GB

That's just the way things are. Sorry. The good news is that there's nothing wrong with your drive.

Thank you - I feel much better - I can go to bed relieved!

Do you know how much hard disk space OS X.3 should be taking up? I am just being cautious because I want to make sure everything is running right.

3GB sounds about right for a default install with all the bundled software.
