Yes, I'm newbie. Is terminal the only app to use a command line? Where can I learn the basics about using it?

Yes, the Terminal is the only "application" to use a command line. You can also get out of the Aqua interface but logging is as >console but you might as well just use the Terminal.

As for learning some commands, you might want to lurk the UNIX forum. Here are 2 thread to start you off, Where Do I Learn This Stuff? and Favorite Terminal Commands.

a large problem I'm having right now is getting into my root directory. I am under my admin account and know my passord, but terminal doesn't like it. It looks like this:

dynwav-216-173:~ dc$ su
Password:
su: Sorry
dynwav-216-173:~ dc$

also, how do I get a password to enter this page:
http://homepage.mac.com/rgriff/

Thanks. -DC

'cd /' will get you into the root directory. 'su' is the switch user command, and with no arguemnts it defaults to switching to root the user. You need to enable root in Netinfo Manager. I do not advice you playing with root until you know what your doing.

Rather than enabling the root user, when you have a specific command you need to perform with root privileges, do
sudo command

and enter your own password at the prompt.
