At our institution we install Virex on all our faculty and staff machines, but I just can't stand virus software on the mac. Then I saw this clamAV opensource virus scanning utility that seems to be pretty full-featured (scans/updates via cronjobs, looks inside mboxes, scans contents of tgz, zip, tar, rar, and a bunch of other archives) solution here: http://clamav.sf.net/

It compiles fine for me under 10.3.1, only it looks for a user/group clamav to run as so I created one. Has anyone played with clamav on their Mac OS X box? I think this is a cool tool with less overhead and lameness than Virex or Norton, but in trying to see if it actually works, there's really nothing to test it with.

I guess I'd like to know if anyone's used or set it up on their Mac? How can my unprivilaged user (clamav) run the freshclam tool via cron (to download and install new virus definitions) if it's not authenticated?

I have it working like a champ with 10.3.3 and CommunigatePro. Here are some links worth checking out. It's not exactly what you are trying to do but they may be useful. Keep in mind that it can only identify viruses and has no ability to clean a file once it finds it.

Apple doesn't read these message boards. If you have a complaint or suggestion for OS X send feedback where it will do some good.

What about just as a simple client antivirus freeware program for the n00b?

I'd use ClamAV, but I'm not a unix type. Is there a gui-ified clamAV with the precompiled binary somewhere for OS X?
