When scrolling through pictures with the preview pane open, I have to pause on the picture before the preview appears. In Jaguar, they appeared immediately.
Damn you, Apple!
Otherwise, Panther is ace. Thanks for the advice from those who know about audio stuff for convincing me to upgrade. Logic and all the soft synths work like a charm.

not that i had a hand in anything you're talking about, but after 100+ views, and no takers on your 'thank you' i thought i'd get the ball rolling by saying, You're Welcome.

Panther does this also strangely, just not sometimes. I used to have jaguar and after I updated to Panther I noticed this. Two weeks after that, I just did a clean install of Panther, and sure enough, it was back to normal with all the thumbs appearing before I scrolled down. Very strange, but I am back to happy

Yeah, this wasn't nearly controversial enough to get a bunch of posts.
Fellow2000- I don't want to do another install just to get my thumbs... this is the second one I've done on this machine and still they don't appear as they should. Boooo! But thanks for the input.
Here's some controversy: Apple's goin' outta business in 3 years and the iPod is gettin' a G5! w00t!

I haven't tried this option but it sounds like it would take care of your issue. In preview preferences on the general tab there is an option to 'Automatically load all thumbnails'. Maybe turning that option on will help?
HTH.

I'm feeling a bit daft, but I can't find the screen you're referring to. Under the finder, I went:
Finder --> Preferences --> General Tab
But I don't see the option you're referring to. Am I missing something?

He's talking about Preview.app not the finder.

Ah. I misunderstood you. I thought you were talking about Preview.app with the thumbnail loading. This is an option in Preview's prefernces not the finder.
Sorry about that.

Oh right right right. Yeah, different thing.
Out of curiosity, it is it just my Powerbook that doesn't instantaneous display the preview in the finder window, or is this common for Panther?

it's not exactly a easly computation. I got a dual gig and it takes a few seconds. So no, it's not just your powerbook.

It was easy in Jaguar, though. It's only in Panther that it becomes so difficult for the system.

How big are these images? 128x128 with 68K images x 100 or so (average guestamation here), has never been fast. It will attempt to load the iamges in the display, but always takes at least a second or so, usually more and I can see my CPU"s pegged.

They're large images, all imported directly from a 3.2 megapixel camera, and taken at medium resolution. They're roughly 800KB each.
The question isn't whether it's a tough calculation for the computer... I'm sure it is. The question is why Jaguar was completely capable of doing it, and Jaguar isn't. On Panther, I could hold the down arrow and scroll through the list, and each and every preview would appear for a fraction of a second. On the same Powerbook, in Jaguar I have to sit on each picture for a second+ until the preview loads.

I guess this is where we differ as for me it has NEVER been that fast. Definatly not on Jaguar, and still not on Panther.

HOLY MOTHER! That'll teach me to post in a rush before work and not proofread!! Worst post ever!
Let's try that again:
