My ibook G3 500 running 10.2.8 will not frequently change the wallpaper I set and move my documents on my desktop around when I do normal computer tasks.

It will just randomily do it and revert back to old desktops and move my icons all around in random order.

While I wouldn't say something is failing, it does sound like a larger issue.

Naturally a system upgrade to Panther may solve this problem, but I would guess the preferences for the desktop may be screwed up...

I've never heard of this issue.

Well I noticed it when say I unplug my iPod... and on random start ups....

It doesn't just happen.... I unplug the something or restart my computer and it just changes my settings around.

I don't see how upgrading to Panther would solve this problem...

Before you try anything else run Disk Utility and repair permissions. You could be running into a problem with bad permissions. If that doesn't fix it you should go into ~/Library/Preferences and trash your Finder permissions, log out, then log back in.

the above was good advice. I was experiencing this same problem, I deleted: "com.apple.finder.plist" and "com.apple.desktop.plist" from users/me/library/preferences, then I put back the desktop picture I wanted and the problem has not come up again.

Check that you're not running out of disk space, Jaguar had the nasty habit of resetting all your prefs if you ran out of disk space. It was only noticeable after you logged out and back in again, to find everything had defaulted. Basically your system needs speace to use as Virtual Memory if you run out nasty things can happen, SO always make sure you have plenty of free disk space.
