I was really annoyed today to notice that Activity Monitor refuses to launch on my iMac. It'll bounce a couple times in the Dock, and then disappear. I tossed the prefs, tried launching it from another user, logged out and in, and eventually restarted. Nothing. Even more annoyed, I pulled out my iBook with the intention of copying over its copy of the application package. First I tried launching it there, and the same thing happened! I'm stumped. I can't find any relevant log entries anywhere. What could be causing this? I don't recall the last time I used Activity Monitor — it wasn't as long as months and months ago, but I'm not sure if it was since the last security update or even 10.3.3. I'm guessing this is not a widespread problem or I would've heard more about it.

Anyone have any suggestions? Though not being able to launch Activity Monitor is frustrating enough, I'm mostly worried that it's a symptom of a larger problem. My next step would be to archive and install, but I really don't have time to commit to such a project for several weeks, so I'd love to find an easier solution.

Thanks.

Sorry. After I posted, I tried repairing permissions. That fixed it. I was shocked at how many permissions needed repairing, though —_seemed like damn near every one. And I swear I repaired permissions after applying the last Security Update.

Anyway, I'll try to remember to do all the standard stuff next time before posting.
